What Are the Main Immigration Requirements for an International Student to Study in the US?
If you have chosen to study in the US, you are about to embark on an exciting journey that will enrich the rest of your life. However, there are numerous considerations that must be made prior to leaving your home country. You will have to consider financial aid, immigration, the possibility that you will have to work while you are in school and much more. One of the most confusing topics of all is that of immigration. What is required to study in the US?
All potential students must apply for and attain a student visa, issued through the INS department of the US federal government. While that sounds simple, it can actually be quite complex and requires quite a bit of time to complete. What must you do to attain a student visa? What forms are required?
An I-20 Acceptance Form – This form shows that you have been accepted by a college or university within the US. In addition, the school must be approved by the INS (Immigration and Naturalization Service). Depending on the type of visa for which you will be applying, the school will have to send you a Form 1-20A-B, or a Form 1-20M-N. This form must be submitted with your visa application.
Application Form – You must also complete a Nonimmigrant Visa Application Form (DS-156) in order to be considered for a student visa. These can be downloaded online or obtained through any US embassy.
Passport – You must have a valid passport for yourself and any children accompanying you, issued from your home country. This passport must be valid for travel within the US and it must be valid for a period no less than six months beyond your intended stay.
Financial Proof – You must also provide evidence that you can afford to attend the school that has accepted you. This may be a scholarship, a loan, or simply personal savings. The amount should be sufficient to pay for tuition, as well as living expenses for the duration of your stay.
Evidence of Your Intent to Return – Finally, you must provide evidence of your intent to return to your home country. This can be a list of names and addresses of family members and friends who can vouch for you, detailed financial investment information tied to your home country, or a course of study that will be of great use in your home nation.
